Kouchd never holds or touches your money. When money changes hands, you use whatever payment app or cash works best for both of you (like Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal). The Ledger simply keeps a clear record of what you agreed on and what was recorded, so there are never any awkward misunderstandings.
1. We never touch your money
Many expense apps try to act like a bank, holding balances in digital wallets or nudging you toward their own payment systems. Kouchd believes personal household finances are best kept directly between the people involved:- No middleman: Kouchd does not hold balances, issue debit cards, or take a fee from your contributions.
- Direct between you two: Send money however you both prefer, whenever you normally do.
- A shared record, not a collection agency: When you record a contribution in the Ledger, both host and guest see the same record of what was reported and whether it has been confirmed. A record doesn’t move money or prove a payment cleared. Houseguests are friends and family, not debtors.
2. Money details stay between you and your host
Group expense apps are built around a shared group balance, so members usually see each other’s expenses. In a home with multiple guests or housemates on different schedules, that lack of privacy gets uncomfortable fast.- Private between guest and host: In Kouchd, financial agreements and records are private between each guest and the host.
- No awkward comparisons: Guest A only sees their own agreement and records. They never see what Guest B agreed to or contributed.
- Shared house details stay shared: The household basics—like quiet hours, house rules, and trash days—are open and visible to everyone staying in the home. Door codes and the Wi-Fi password appear for a guest once their agreement is accepted and are hidden again after the stay ends.
3. No entry limits and no ads
- Add as much as you need: On Kouchd Free, you can record as many contributions and shopping items as you want.
- Calm and ad-free: Kouchd shows no ads or sponsored popups. For how we use analytics and optional advertising measurement, see Privacy, data, and security.
4. Everything for the house in one place
Flatastic organizes chores, and Splitwise tracks shared bills, but neither helps you manage the whole stay together. Kouchd brings the whole household into one simple space:- Clear stay agreements: Simple dates and agreed contribution amounts so everyone starts on the same page.
- Private Ledger: Choose Add contribution to record what you shared, then look back over previous weeks’ contribution records.
- House guide: Wi-Fi passwords, parking guidelines, trash schedules, and contact info right where guests can find them.
- Shared shopping list: A shared list for paper towels, coffee, or milk. Shopping items are notes only; they don’t change a balance. In the web app, you can start a contribution from a checked-off shared item and enter the amount yourself.
How they compare
Splitwise and Flatastic change their features and plans over time, so check their own sites for current details.
